The vibrational spectra of PbMg(CO3)2.


The vibrational spectra of synthetic PbMg(CO3)2 are measured at ambient temperature and atmospheric pressure by FTIR and Raman spectroscopy. A number of first-order internal modes of the carbonate ion group are found to be infrared (2, 3 and 4) and Raman (1, 2, 3 and 4) active. Additionally, the (1+ 3) and (1 + 4) combination modes are observed in the FTIR spectrum. The carbon isotopic-shift coefficient for 2 due to the substitution of 12C by 13C (2 (13CO32-) / 2 (12CO32-) = 0.967 ± 0.003) agrees with the theoretical value of 0.969.
